If you are not a gamer then you can use 16gb ram till somewhere between 2025 to 2030 when there might be a slight increase in ram consumption of browsers or other stuff as new things would come in these application resulting in slower pc at lower ddr4 type ram.
20GB is an unusual number but will probably be OK. Just check for the A/B balance. 16GB + 8GB — in a 4 slot that might be 2 x 4 and 2 x 8 because it is best to balance the A&B for optimum performance.
As far as performance goes, no such thing as too much RAM. However, in terms of making your money do something useful, you don’t get any benefit over 16~24 GB. So by those terms, you’re wasting your money if you buy more than 24~32 GB.
