Are Windows updates necessary?

Windows updates is completely optional and in no way required. It does not make your computer any safer (firewall/anti-virus do that). Any update you may actually need can be downloaded on its own when you buy new software/hardware. Windows update is far more likely to break your computer than keep it safe.
